Dr. Shad Helmstetter said in his book, Choices, “The end result of your life here on earth will always be the sum total of the choices you made while you were here.” Think about it. You are the only person responsible for the outcome of days spent on this planet. Your choices carry power that should never be taken lightly, because once you know how to harness that power, you can absolutely change the course of your life, and even those around you.
The Bible tells a story, 2 Kings 6 of a famine in a city caused by an embargo. The Syrian army surrounded the wall with the plan to intercept all goods that came to be traded and sold. As a result, bird dung was sold at premium price as food, as well as the heads of donkeys. In fact, two women made a very desperate agreement. One day they would eat one lady’s baby and the next they would eat the other. These were terrible times.
At the beginning of chapter 7, the man of God, prophesies that the next day will produce a flood of food and goods at the gate of the city. Switch scenes to a leper colony. Four men say to each other why sit here and die?
To truly understand the context of the statement you would have to understand the Hebrew law concerning people with leprosy. Because this disease is highly contagious, people who suffered with it were quarantined outside of the cities gates. It was unlawful to go into town and do anything, so the lepers had to depend on the kindness of others for food and water. If its bad in the city, then you know its bad in the leper’s camp!
They reasoned that if they go back to town, there was no food there, and they would die. If they stayed put, they would die. So then the logical choice is to go to the Syrian army. If they kill them, obviously they would die! However, if they have mercy on them, they would live. A “No – Duh!” decision.
What can we learn from this story? We don’t have the luxury to do nothing! Never allow a challenging situation to stall you in moving forward. You can’t just sit and die! Prepare for the worse but learn how to anticipate the best! When you move in God’s direction he is able to do what only he can do. God can amplify your steps and give you access to resources beyond your imagination!
So get up and live! Don’t sit there and die! DO SOMETHING!
