Today, September 12, 2012, was the day it seems that the entire world was waiting for : Apple unveils the new Iphone. All the speculations and rumors were quieted by the reality of what is, Iphone 5. Whether a tech enthusiast or an everyday soccer mom, there are a lot of exciting new features for any user. There is no doubt that the lines are forming, full of people excited about this new thing.
I’m not an Iphone user, but I can’t look down my nose at those of you who are; because I am anxiously awaiting Blackberry 10. However, it is a sad reality that most of us get really excited about things that don’t really matter.
In talking with a cell phone sales rep, I asked which of the smartphones he thought was best. His answer was eye-opening. “I really don’t get excited about smartphones anymore,” he said. “At the end of the day, they all do the same thing.”
It makes me realize that all the stuff that excites us are not the core things in life that bring joy. There will be someone in the Iphone 5 line that has no one to share their life with. Someone’s candidate will win the office, but they will still take their own life the next week, because they see no hope. Someone’s team will win the championship, but they still will feel far away from God.
Cluttering our lives with things, can’t replace the love, relationships, and values that really mean the most. It is so easy to take family, church and God for granted, and so we allow ourselves to get bored with them. Instead, we should take a look and reevaluate our levels of excitement towards those core things in our lives that genuinely make us happy.
“What kind of deal is it to get everything you want but lose yourself? What could (be worth trading) your soul for?” Matthew 16:26 (The Message Bible)
