I’ve done it dozens of times: sat down with the intentions of scrolling through Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram for just a few minutes. Only to look up two hours later … LOL … SMH …
Or perhaps one Saturday afternoon, you decide to sit and watch a couple of episodes of your favorite show on Netflix or Hulu. You look up and it’s Monday morning and you’ve watched three seasons.
You would be amazed at all the things that have us hypnotized. So many people have their gaze fixed on things that add no value to their lives, nor gets them any closer to reaching their goals. We are easily lulled into a trance by the voices, systems and images that seek to capture our minds and hearts. While some of these voices, systems, and images are presented with pure motives, far too many are on the prowl to control us, getting us to do all sorts of things we may not normally do.
2 Corinthinas 10:3-6 says this:
“It’s dog-eat-dog out there! The world doesn’t fight fair. But we don’t live or fight our battles that way—never have and never will. The tools of our trade aren’t for marketing or manipulation, but they are for demolishing that entire massively corrupt culture. We use our powerful God-tools for smashing warped philosophies, tearing down barriers erected against the truth of God, fitting every loose thought and emotion and impulse into the structure of life shaped by Christ. Our tools are ready at hand for clearing the ground of every obstruction and building lives of obedience into maturity.” (The Message Bible)
In this passage, the Apostle is urging us to be mindful of those, afore-mentioned voices, systems, and images that present themselves, secretly motivated to ultimately destroy us. This type of destruction is slow and subtle, but certainly sure. If we aren’t careful, calculating, and cognizant of those things, we will eventually fall victim to their devices.
Please be aware of all those who seek to occupy your attention. You are better than the average, because there is greatness inside of you. You have greater things to do. Can’t you see? You have a call to answer and a purpose to fulfill, and you will never accomplish that enthralled in the trance of other people. So control your gaze and protect your heart, because the thing that has your attention, will eventually have your affection. Don’t allow yourself to be hypnotized with what they do, because they will leave you broken and they’ll be paid.
