Mavericks, Hellfires, and TOW missiles in 1991. Cruise missiles in 1993. Tomahawks in 1998. The Fall of Baghdad in 2003. In my lifetime, I have been able to watch the bombs fall over Baghdad, almost live. My original interest in the conflict with Iraq stemmed from the fact that my brother was sent Saudi Arabia for the first Gulf war. I can remember being glued to the screen and watching the little green dots fall to their exploding end. These weren’t just big blanket bombs dropped over the city, these were strategic, target focused missiles; designed to lock their “sights” and destroy their intended object.
You and I are also built the same way. We are designed with the ability to set our aim and focus on our target until we reach it. When you set your sights on a target, the body releases a chemical, called dopamine, that gives you a sensation of accomplishment and gratification. In the same way, whenever you can sense that you are closer to your goal, your body releases another round of the same chemical, until you finally reach it. Reaching that goal releases a final expolsion of the feel good chemical
Unfortunately, many of us allow ourselves to get distracted, and turn our eyes away from our goals. We can find the same sensation of accomplishment when we buy expensive things. So while biologically we feel good, psychologically we can’t sustain the feeling; because there is no true satisfaction in things. We can find the same sensation in superficial interactions with others. So while we have tricked our body into a feeling, psychologically, emotionally, and spiritually we are bankrupt; because there is no lasting fulfilment in relationships with no depth.
If you want to have true fulfillment, you must live your life intentionally. Instead of just existing and reacting, you have to actively pursue your life with precision. Like a laser guided missile, you have to be connected to your Creator, who will always point you in the right direction. Like a heat seeking missile, you have to be sensitive to the opportunities worth seizing. Like an optically guided missile, you have to secure are clear vision, and aggressively chase it down. Like a cruise missile, you have to remain focused for the long haul; and like a stealth bomber you’ve got to sometimes operate under the radar, without attracting distraction.
Live your life intentionally. Make a plan. Write down. Stay focused. Work hard. Push through. Stay connected to God and to others who truly love you. And when purpose, skill and destiny collide, you will see the explosion of accomplishment. “Don’t pull the thang out, unless you plan to bang! Don’t plan to bang, unless you plan to hit something!”
“Then it happened when the Philistine rose and came and drew near to meet David, that David ran quickly toward the battle line to meet the Philistine. And David put his hand into his bag and took from it a stone and slung it, and struck the Philistine on his forehead. And the stone sank into his forehead, so that he fell on his face to the ground. Thus David prevailed … (1 Samuel 17:48-50a, New American Standard Bible).“
