I’ve never had a pet. I don’t know how it feels to be protected by someone who isn’t human. I can remember once, when my sister closed the door on my hand, and I screamed like crazy. The moon was full, and so were my lungs. My brother came to my aid but couldn’t unlock the door. So, he held my other hand while my sister got my mom. While I had my brother, some people have pets to protect them.
Today, in a fourth grade class, I learned that pets can do many things, besides being cute. They can circle and protect us from snakes and other wild animals. They can jump fences and investigate strange noises. They can even help with asthma, by helping to calm a child’s breathing. Let’s not forget about service animals, such as dogs and even monkeys, who protect humans in various ways.
Whether you are being protected by a human, or an animal, you should feel lucky that someone is there for you. Maybe I should visit a pet store.
