My Mind Playing Tricks On Me

The human mind has always been the source of great study, debate, and theory. How it really works, we may never fully understand, but it is something we all experience. The same mind that produces wonderous imagination, can also yield extreme insecurities. For those of us who deal with it on a daily basis, we know that insecurities are no joke. They damage our self-image, self-esteem, and self-worth, but at the end of the day, the replay of insecurity is really your mind playing tricks on you.

Insecurity is an exaggerated weakness. Perceived, and sometimes even real, it is a weakness that takes hold of your thoughts, and begin to scream louder than your possibilities and promises. No one is perfect, nor does anyone do anything perfectly. We all have flaws. The problem comes when we give our flaws too much weight, empowering them to suffocate our strengths. We all react to them differently. While some shut down, sitting in four-cornered rooms staring at candles, and others of us try to overcompensate and overpower our insecurities, with bloody knuckles from punching the concrete; we must learn that our insecurities are nothing but a trick of the mind.

Moses was called by God to stand before the Egyptian king and declare the word of the Lord (read Exodus 3). Moses gave every excuse in the book. He argued being a nobody in comparison to the king, he argued an impairment in his speech, and even argued being rejected by the very people he was sent to deliver. While he had all these legitimate insecurities, there was one fact that should have overridden them all; God was with him.

Whenever your mind begins to play tricks on you, remember that fact. God is with you. Yes, you may have shortcomings, imperfections, and weakness that may hinder your success, but having God on your side will never cause them to negate your success. “What, then, shall we say in response to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? (Romans 8:31, New International Version)”
