Summertime

It’s a feeling we all know so well. When we were kids, we all looked forward to it, with great anticipation. There is a song that declares Christmas to be the most wonderful time of the year, but there’s another time, playing a very close second: SUMMERTIME! It’s a time that we all wish we could have again.

Remember your first day of summer vacation? You planned to sleep in. You planned to eat what you want, when you wanted. You were ready to do whatever it was you wanted to do, even if it was nothing at all. And there it was, a day slightly transformed, because you needed a break from the norm; just a little something to break the monotony. It was a time of REST!

In a world of hustle and bustle, hurry up and wait, then hurry up again, most of us live life on the proverbial edge. We don’t just work anymore, we grind. We push hard all the time to make things happen, because eventually we want to get to a place of rest. Where all of our hard work pays off, and we don’t have to be bogged down the cares of life. Wouldn’t that be nice? Wouldn’t it be awesome to wake up and not dread the day ahead? Wouldn’t it be great to have no stress, no grind; nothing pulling us in every direction? We are all looking, wishing, hoping, and praying for it: REST. SUMMERTIME.

Well, Jesus offers us summertime. While there are so many other promises in the world for the same thing, the best anyone else can offer you is an anxiety replacement, or a temporary pause. Jesus is wanting to give you a life of summertime. He offers very clearly and confidently, “Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you’ll recover your life. I’ll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me—watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won’t lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me and you’ll learn to live freely and lightly (Matthew 11:28-30, The Message Bible).”

So if you’re tired of all the turmoil, and sick of the stress; if you’re grieved from all the grinding, and exhausted from all the anxiety, come to Jesus. Hand it all over to Him, then just sit back and unwind!
