Yes, we live in an awful world, where people seem to be getting worse and worse. It is becoming increasingly difficult to watch the news, read the paper, or even scroll through social media without being bombarded with the darkest sides of humanity. Everywhere we turn there is murder, robbery, hate speech, and the list goes on and on.
As the world is getting worse, many are searching for solutions: a cure to our ills. Some offer war and politics, some say money and prosperity, and others swear by religion and philosophy. Please don’t for one second think that I’m saying any of these are bad, because they aren’t. There is a proper place for them all in our society, but what I am saying is that they don’t solve our problems. I can testify that neither politics, money, nor religion can make bad people any better, so these can’t be the answer. Jesus told us thousands of years ago, that the only thing to solve these types of problems is love.
And (Jesus says to us), “‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ This is the great and foremost commandment. The second is like it, ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ On these two commandments depend the whole (Bible).” (Matthew 22:37-40, New American Standard Bible)
Then The Apostle Paul picks it up in Galatians 5 by saying, “For you were called to freedom, brethren; only do not turn your freedom into an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another. For the whole Law is fulfilled in one word, in the statement, ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.‘ But if you bite and devour one another, take care that you are not consumed by one another.” (vs 13-15, New American Standard Bible)
In other words, if it were not for love, we would all be destroyed, because we would destroy each other. God’s gift to humanity is love, and John 3:16 bears it out. “This is how much God loved the world: He gave his Son, his one and only Son. And this is why: so that no one need be destroyed; by believing in him, anyone can have a whole and lasting life.” (The Message Bible)
Love so designed that it benefits everyone, whether you’re giving it or receiving it. As often as we try to side step it, Diana Ross got it right, what the world needs, now, is love, sweet love. Yes this world is full of problems and we need a solution. If it isn’t love, I don’t know what is.
