What’s My Name?

There is so much in a name; more than many of us realize. Whatever you call anything is vitally important. The ancient Hebraic cultures understood this principle very well. There is a prophetic activation that happens when we name anything. In other words, it will become whatever you name it.

My name is Derek Joaquin Murphy. The story goes that my dad, McCoy Jr., wanted to name me McCoy III, and my mom wasn’t having it. Perhaps she didn’t know that McCoy means “a fire”. That name perfectly describes my dad. But me? Not so much. They were able to settle on the name they gave me and it really happens to fit who I am.

Derek means “a ruler of his people.” In other words, a leader! In the last few years, I’ve discovered that God has given me wisdom for leadership. Not only that, but He has also given me a burden to teach these principles to others. So in some ways, I have been positioned to be a leader of leaders. I don’t say that to boast, but I did write a book.

Joaquin is the Spanish version of the biblical name, Joakim, which means, lifted by God. Murphy is anIrish surname meaning sea warrior. If you put that all together I am “A leader, lifted by God, to contend in unstable circumstances.” Wow! That is really something to live up to!

Looking at it, all spelled out like this, really makes it a bit overwhelming to me. How can I (little ‘ole insignificant me) live up to such an awesome call?

Last week I told you about Moses, and how he also answered an awesome call.  God charged Moses with delivering his people from the bondage of the world’s strongest super power of that day. Moses explains to God how he couldn’t do this awesome thing because he wasn’t equipped, and his name carried no great significance. He asked God, since I can’t do this in my own strength, who should I say has sent me? In other words, what is your name. God responded in Exodus 3:14, “I am.”

In my head, I see Moses pause after writing “I am,” waiting for the rest of it. But God says, “I am, that I am.” God isn’t speaking in riddles, He is just simple describing the all-encompassing nature of God. God is already everything He will ever be, so WHATEVER you need God to be FOR YOU, He already IS. So what’s His name? I AM.

What is YOUR name? What if I told you that God knows it, and even ordained it from the beginning of time? What if I told you that God has been calling you with an awesome calling? How will you ever be able to walk in His divine calling on your life? Well … He knows, He’s called you, and He will be “I am” for you … in that order!
