God is an infinite and all powerful being. He is far too big and complex for any mind to fully understand, so it would be arrogant of anyone, including me, to say they know the mind of God. We cannot fully comprehend Him, we can only know what God has revealed. (more…)
Everybody wants a hook up nowadays. Internet stars seem to be born every minute, and everyone becoming an entrepreneur or building a brand. One of the most effective ways to market yourself in this climate is to hitch yourself to a big name, so you can be associated with a known figure. The right co-sign for someone who is already “poppin” can do wonders for your brand.
Last month, I shared a sermon series about generosity; and as I was preparing for the last sermon, something in the scripture hit me hard in my chest. In 2 Corinthians 8, The Apostle Paul was describing the generosity of the churches in Macedonia. There was a great need and the apostles were receiving relief funds to help some of the saints that were in dire straights. The churches in Macedonia urged the apostles to participate in the relief efforts, and this surprises Paul because the people of Macedonia were living in poverty themselves.
At over 32 million units sold, Michael Jackson’s Thriller is by far the most successful recording in history. I just want that to sink in; after 35 years, no other record has sold more than this instant classic. It is the epitome of recorded music success, but at what point do we determine that it was a successful venture or not? We are talking about the critically acclaimed work, that millions of people around the world still listen to. This is the same record that catapulted Michael Jackson in to pop music royalty. When was this work a success? (more…)
I hate to say it, but reality is relative. We all have our own variations of what is real and what is not, and we subsequently live in response to the reality we choose. Where there was once absolutes surrounding things as fundamental as gender identification, we now live in a culture where all those concrete concepts are now being broken up, and we get live in our own relative realities. I was working for a parcel delivery company, years ago. I was the only one working at the time, because my wife had two toddlers and a new one on the way at home. All of my coworkers knew my situation, so one day, a young lady I worked with, pulled me to the side and asked “How do you do it?” (more…)
Have you ever heard the saying “too heavenly minded, that you’re no earthly good”? Well clichés are cliches for a reason, because this is a true statement. One of the greatest criticisms of the Christian faith is our preoccupation with heaven and what happens after we die. This fascination is particularly prevalent in the African-American church, because historically black slaves were taught that we should only expect our reward in heaven, and that teaching just remained a fundamental philosophical fixture. In fact, I can not recall a funeral, in a black church, that I did not hear the song, “Going Up Yonder”. It doesn’t stop there. The church at large sings “I’ll Fly Away”, “Sweet By And By”, and “When We All Get To Heaven” with a seemingly greater fervor than others. (more…)
California is a unique place, and the people who live there (I believe) love to tell you where they are from. They are fully aware that there is no other place like California. California is a destination for millions of vacationers and dreamers, with bright lights and big cities in their eyes. However, those from there wear it as badge of honor, even if they have to move somewhere else. I know people who have lived in Texas for 30 years, but still identify themselves as from California. It is just amazing to me. (more…)
I’ve heard it seen at time and time again. A parent will get down on their knee and look their small child in the eyes and say something to the effect of, “I ain’t raising no punk. Now, don’t you start a fight, but you better not let them run over you.” (more…)
It is inevitable. Everyone is going to want something that they do not need. Not only that, but we will all at sometime want something that is bad, dangerous, or down right fatal for us. At some level, we are all fascinated with the excitement of thrills. Being daring and even cheating death is attractive to us, but the reality is that we need to, in many degrees, calm that urge down. (more…)
